Clinical Service » General Obstetrics
Introduction
This division provides comprehensive service for low risk pregnant women. It is organized into the Red Team and the Blue Team, each led by a consultant obstetrician. Both teams provide similar services. We are also heavily involved in the teaching of medical students and training of interns, family physicians and Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialists.
Clinical services
Antenatal care and postnatal care are conducted in Tsan Yuk Hospital, in collaboration with Maternity and Child Health Centres (of the Department of Health) in Hong Kong West and outlying Islands. Shared care with private obstetricians is also available as an option.
Antenatal classes (Chinese and English) are run by our midwives and are opened to women who have booked with us for delivery. Antenatal and postnatal exercise classes are conducted by physiotherapists.
All deliveries are conducted in Queen Mary Hospital. Most normal deliveries are conducted by midwives. In-house obstetricians, anaesthesiologist and neonatologists are available 24 hours. All babies, except those who need special baby care, are roomed in with their mothers to facilitate establishment of breast feeding and early bonding. Early discharge (48 hours after delivery) for uncomplicated deliveries minimizes the disruption in family life. Support after discharge is provided by ambulatory day care service.
