Introduction

The Reproductive Medicine Division is a multi-disciplinary team with contributions from urologists, endocrinologists, psychologists and medical social workers. The Division provides clinical management for patients with subfertility, menopausal problems, menstrual disorder and unwanted pregnancies. Our mission is to provide high quality patient-centred service to the community in an effective and efficient manner by optimum utilisation of available resources, through the concerted efforts of satisfying patientsˇ¦ needs, facilitating staffˇ¦s motivation, and inviting public participation. We also capitalise on the expertise of the staff from both the Hospital Authority and the University of Hong Kong in an effort to provide special tertiary care to the community. Furthermore, we provide training to nurses, other allied health workers, medical undergraduates and postgraduates in Hong Kong, other parts of China and South East Asia and conduct research in reproduction in order to improve the management of patients and to further our knowledge.

Division / Team activities

Patients who are unable to conceive due to various reasons and suffering from recurrent miscarriage will be seen at Subfertility clinic. Those having severe male problems are further evaluated at the Male Infertility Clinic. The treatment we can offer includes reproductive surgery, induction of ovulation by anti-oestrogen, pulsatile GnRH and gonadotrophin injection, intrauterine insemination in conjunction with ovarian stimulation, and in vitro fertilization treatment (including embryo freezing and intracytoplasmic sperm injection). Spermatozoa may be obtained by a surgical operation from the epididymis in obstructive causes of azoospermia and from the testis in non-obstructive causes. Semen cryopreservation is offered to those patients who require surgical retrieval of spermatozoa and cancer patients who may become azoospermic after treatment. Genetic diagnosis of embryos prior to transfer may also be performed in patients with indications such as chromosomal abnormalities and thalassemia.[detail refer to IVF homepage]

A clinical psychologist works closely with our team and provides counselling and psychological support to those patients in need. Medical social workers from Department of Social Work and Social Administration provide group counselling sessions to patients undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment to identify the stress and the different ways to relieve the stress.

Patients with menstrual irregularities, endocrine disorders and developmental abnormalities of the genital tract are managed at Menstrual Disorder Clinic . Patients with premature / surgical / natural menopause requiring counselling and / or treatment are seen at Menopause Clinic. Apart from teaching undergraduates, we provide training for specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (United Kingdom) and the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists also recognize our department for subspecialist training in Reproductive Medicine. We also organize course on various aspects of reproductive medicine on a regular basis.
