Gynaecological Oncology

Introduction to Gynaecological Oncology

The Gynaecologic Oncology team is a division of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, the University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital. For over forty years, we have been providing specialized care for women with gynaecologic cancer. We are a tertiary referral centre for both common and rare gynaecological malignancies, with patients referred from both private and government hospitals in Hong Kong and Macau. As a leading hospital we conduct different kinds of cancer surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted operations. Besides, our unit also offers chemotherapy, hormonal and targeted therapy. Our team works closely with the Department of Clinical Oncology and Palliative team which provide radiotherapy and palliative care. Our services are supported by other departments such as the Departments of Pathology, Radiology, Surgery and Medicine, and we receive support from other allied teams including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, social workers and psychologists.

Our division is recognized by the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, UK for the training of gynaecological oncologists. A special programme is offered for overseas fellows or scholars. The division also provides training in gynaecological oncology to basic and advanced trainees in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Hong Kong and abroad. We contribute to undergraduate teaching where gynaecologic oncology is in the core curriculum of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Our team is eager on updating our knowledge and techniques and we invite different overseas experts to visit our centre for exchange of ideas.

Our division is active in both basic and clinical research. There are laboratory facilities and expertise in immunoassays, biomolecular studies on DNA, RNA and protein. We have multi-centre studies on cervical cancer and gestational trophoblastic disease follow-up programme and clinical trials in collaboration with the other departments in the University of Hong Kong, including Department of Pathology, Department of Clinical Oncology, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and allied health services including Physiotherapy.
